SM has always had their eyes on China market and even Lee Sooman previously had made a statement that China will be the next Hollywood.
Now, SM is an entertainment company. They can promote all those SMTOWN love as much as they want, but don’t forget they are a company first before that. It means that money is their goal. Truth hurts and I honestly don’t like this fact, but let’s be realistic.
Overseas market, especially China, pays more than domestic market. Siwon has name in China, be it from SJ’s activities or just his individual activities. He’s good looking and such a gentleman. He has connections to a lot of famous people. He has good image. He’s not as fluent as Zhoumi in Chinese but enough to understand and make some conversations. This aspect of him makes him appealing to the market in China, especially the last one. It’s no wonder he gets offers from China. And I am not saying this because he is my bias, but just by the aspects of him that I have stated, I think he maybe the SJ member who got the most offers from overseas, especially China. And then, Siwon is an artist under SM Entertainment. As his management company, SM gets to choose which project Siwon will take. If you were SM, a company which main purpose is to gain as much profit as possible (since it’s business after all), what would you prefer? More money overseas or less money domestic?
Siwon has been having a lot of activities overseas, particularly China, because he gets a lot of offers from there and like I said, if you were SM, which one would you pick? More money from overseas activities or less money domestic?
Tbh, although Siwon have acting projects in Korea and may be more known as an actor, Siwon probably doesn’t have much appeal for Korean public as… let’s say, Lee Seunggi. Or Lee Minho. Or Lee Jongsuk. Or Kim Woobin. Imho, from all of his acting projects, none of them really made a big hit (meaning it made him really more known in public). At least not until ‘King of Drama’. His character as Kang Hyunmin really made a huge good impression on netizens for him. But, even though KoD was a good drama and the drama and his character actually were liked a lot by netizens, sadly it didn’t achieve high viewer rating. Compare that to all the other actors that I mentioned, where all of them had dramas that hit big in Korea. Those actors might be more preferred in Korea than Siwon might be, although in terms of looks and image, Siwon doesn’t lose to them. High preference means company would make a high offer to artist to involve in the company’s project. Thus, my assumption is that’s why SM choose to pick the overseas activity more than domestic one for Siwon, simply because it makes more profit for them than if Siwon taking activity in Korea. It’s probably the same case with Eunhae or even KRY. Those sub-units had their albums released first in Japan and they even did their own concert there. In fact, Eunhae are now in the middle of their concert tour. Some fans might question, why in Japan? why not Korea? Again, the answer is money. Because they make more money in there.
Anyway, this is my own perspective, so take it with a grain of salt.
It’s true that Siwon doesn’t have as much appealing in Korean as those actors you mentioned. However, seeing SM let DongHae, KangIn, HeeChul accept dramas in Korea while their names are not more or less appealing than Siwon either, you can conclude that the only reason Siwon gets more activities overseas because he is the best bet as ‘global face’ who can make his own name and earn more money for SM. PERIOD!
